Atlanta is ranked as the most desirable city for Black Americans to live in and for the best food, according to a recent study. Low living and housing costs, safe and low crime rates are the top factors that make a place desirable for Black Americans. These findings were part of a study conducted by Clever Real Estate, where 1,000 American adults were surveyed to determine their preferred living areas. The research also revealed that most Americans are willing to move due to factors like crime, cost of living, and taxes.
For Black Americans, high crime rates, high cost of living, expensive homes, and high rent prices were the top factors that made a place undesirable. Affordable housing was identified as the most important consideration for moving to a new location.
In terms of the most desirable cities for Black Americans to live in, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Virginia Beach, and Los Angeles were the top choices. Meanwhile, St. Louis, Washington, Tampa, Virginia Beach, and Seattle were ranked as the least desirable cities.
Jaime Dunaway-Seale, the author of “The Best (and Worst) Places to Live in 2024, According to Americans,” explained that Atlanta’s rich history, culture, and significance in the Civil Rights Movement contribute to its popularity among Black Americans. The city is known for its arts and music culture, especially hip-hop, and is home to the largest collection of HBCUs in the country.
When it comes to cities with the best food, Atlanta was ranked first by Black Americans, followed by New York, New Orleans, Chicago, and Austin, Texas. On the state level, California, Florida, New York, Georgia, and Hawaii were considered the most desirable places to live by Black Americans.
The study also highlighted other categories, such as the most underrated cities and states, areas with the nicest and rudest residents, and the ugliest and prettiest cities.
