Workers at the Boeing Portland Facility in Portland, Oregon, held a rally on September 19, 2024. The strike by more than 30,000 machinists has halted most of Boeing’s aircraft production. Boeing sweetened its contract offer on Monday, calling it their “best and final” proposal. However, the labor union criticized the offer, saying Boeing didn’t negotiate it and accused the company of bypassing the union.
Boeing’s new offer includes a 30% increase in general wages over four years, a $6,000 ratification bonus, reinstated annual bonuses, and an increased 401(k) match. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 751, the workers’ union, expressed dissatisfaction with the new offer, stating that it was presented without any discussion.
Boeing set a deadline for ratification by Friday at 11:59 p.m. PT, but the union said it didn’t have enough time to present details to members or secure voting locations. The union mentioned that Boeing refused further discussion and therefore they would not be voting on the 27th. However, they plan to survey members about Boeing’s new offer.
Boeing defended its bargaining position, stating that they had negotiated in good faith since formal talks began in March. The new offer is seen as Boeing’s latest effort to end the costly strike, which has been estimated to cost the company $50 million a day. Both Boeing and the union expressed disappointment with the negotiations, following an unsuccessful federal mediation last week.
The strike occurred after workers voted overwhelmingly against the previous proposal. Machinists rejected the contract with higher pay, citing the need for wages to keep up with the rising cost of living in the Seattle area. Some workers have started taking side jobs to prepare for a long strike and cope with the financial impact.
