The negotiations for the acquisition of Manuel Ugarte are ongoing.

Fabrice Hawkins, a reporter for the French ‘RMC Sport’, reported on the 23rd (Korean time), “Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester United are still in discussion about Ugarte’s transfer. Although no agreement has been reached yet, they are very close. The two teams are negotiating based on an obligatory acquisition clause of 60 million euros (approximately 89.4 billion won) after the loan.”

Ugarte is a 23-year-old midfielder from Uruguay. He is evaluated for his vigorous activity and solid defensive abilities. After joining Sporting Lisbon in 2021, Ugarte established himself by playing 25 league matches in his first season. Thanks to his performance at Sporting, he was also called up to the Uruguay national team.

In the 2022-23 season, he got even more playing opportunities. Ugarte played in 31 league matches. He also made it to the final squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, he only stayed on the bench in all three group stage matches. Despite that, he continues to receive regular call-ups for the national team, and in March of last year, he played in a friendly match against South Korea.

Before the start of last season, he was linked with several teams. Initially, Chelsea was very interested in Ugarte. Manager Mauricio Pochettino pursued his acquisition upon joining Chelsea. In relation to this, the UK ‘Football Insider’ mentioned, “Manager Pochettino personally called Ugarte to discuss the acquisition and persuade him.”

However, they ultimately failed to acquire him. PSG entered the competition and emerged as the winner by offering better conditions than Chelsea. The contract runs until the summer of 2028. Ugarte played in 25 Ligue 1 matches. With 1,935 minutes in the league, he was the 6th highest within the team. He was ranked 3rd among midfielders, following Verratti and Wijnaldum.

However, he didn’t receive solid trust. As the season progressed, Fabian Luiz and Carlos Soler also got opportunities in his place. As he completed his first season, Manchester United showed interest. United plans to bring Ugarte in to replace Casemiro, who left this summer.

Ugarte wants to move to Manchester United. Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano mentioned, “Manchester United has reached a personal agreement with Ugarte. Despite not being able to compete in the UEFA Champions League, Ugarte wants the transfer.”

As the player desires the transfer, PSG has prepared a season plan without Ugarte. Earlier, French ‘Le Quipe’ journalist Loic Tanzi reported, “Ugarte, Danilo Pereira, and Nordin Mukiele have been excluded from training. All three players could leave PSG before the end of the summer transfer window.” They also didn’t participate in the opening match.

The issue was the transfer fee. PSG reportedly set a minimum price of 70 million euros (approximately 104.2 billion won). Manchester United, having already spent a lot on transfers like Raphinha, Matheus Pereira, Nusair Mazraoui, and Joshua Zirkzee, had to consider if they could meet the asking price. They have come close to an agreement at 60 million euros.
