Medical association chairman targeted by residents over increased medical school admissions.

The recent controversy over conciliatory remarks by the Korean Medical Association (KMA) continues, with former KMA chairman also criticizing Park Dan’s statement to not speak carelessly. In a briefing on September 30, KMA made a statement suggesting that if the reduction in medical school enrollment for 2026 was assured, they could consider accepting an increase in enrollment for 2025. This drew strong backlash from the medical community.

Previously, Minister of Health Jo Gyu-hong expressed regret for the situation where medical students and residents are considering their careers instead of dedicating themselves to essential medical services. KMA spokesperson Choi Anna responded positively to the government’s change in tone towards medical professionals who have been demonized for the past seven months.

In response, Park Dan publicly criticized KMA’s statements for not representing the views of medical residents and students, warning against speaking carelessly. He emphasized that there would be no change in the 2025 medical school enrollment and criticized KMA Chairman Im Hyun-taek for not representing resigned residents and medical students on leave.

Park Dan also expressed frustration with the current situation, cautioning against giving signals that could be misinterpreted. Former KMA Chairman Roh Hwan-kyu also criticized KMA’s message, noting the difficulties faced by medical professionals and students due to the government’s policies. The growing resentment towards KMA within the medical community indicates a deepening divide amid the prolonged government and medical sector conflict.
