The announcement of this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature winner on the 10th has drawn much attention. The Nobel Prize in Literature, organized by the Swedish Academy, keeps the list of candidates secret until the official announcement. Predictions for the winner are often based on betting odds, with Australian novelist Gerald Murnane currently being considered the frontrunner. Other potential winners include Chinese author Can Xue, Australian writer Alexis Wright, Jamaica Kincaid, and Anne Carson. Despite being relatively unknown in Korea, Murnane has published several works since 1974. Can Xue, on the other hand, is a frequently mentioned candidate with popular works such as “The Last Lover” and “Five Spice Street.” The betting site Nicer Odds has ranked a total of 26 authors, including Thomas Pynchon, Haruki Murakami, and Margaret Atwood. Korean writers Kim Hye-soon, Han Kang, and Hwang Sok-young have also been mentioned as potential candidates. The possibility of a female author winning this year is also being cautiously predicted, as the Nobel Prize in Literature has alternated between male and female winners since 2012. In 2022, the award went to French author Annie Ernaux, while last year it was won by Norwegian writer Yoon Pose.
