Papua New Guinea faces governance crisis with Australia’s involvement.

In Papua New Guinea, roadside betel nut stalls were shut down just before Pope Francis’ recent visit. This closure represents a larger issue in the country, highlighting the growing gap between the elite and the population. The PNG opposition has revealed funding shortfalls under the Marape government, impacting critical sectors like health and education. The 2024 National Census has been delayed due to government mismanagement, despite allocated funds. While the PNG budget is strained, Prime Minister Marape has allocated significant funds to his office and the National Executive Council. These funds are in addition to Australian loans, which lack transparency and accountability. Australians are questioning the use of these funds, especially as domestic concerns grow. Papua New Guineans are also perplexed by the mismanagement of funds. The International Monetary Fund has also approved a loan for budget support in PNG. It is imperative to reassess the financial relationship between Australia and PNG for the benefit of both nations.
